Overview

This project rooted in the community focuses on addressing challenges faced by local public educational institutions across various areas of Chios Island. It aims to provide assistance to these, often understaffed schools, creating a better and safer learning environment for local children while fostering cross-cultural interactions. These projects are not connected to the refugee crisis, and focus on local residents on Chios island.

Within the Kindergarten Support project volunteers are placed in Kindergartens and Nursery Schools throughout Chios Island. Their role involves supporting local teachers and staff in their daily tasks and caring for children aged 3 to 6. The project strives to spark students’ interest in learning and provide assistance to teachers when needed. This opportunity suits those who thrive in structured environments.

You will assist local teachers during lessons, helping with arts and crafts, overseeing mealtimes, participating in cleaning and administrative work, setting up classrooms, and engaging in playtime supervision. Participants are encouraged to infuse their cultural backgrounds into the children’s daily lives, introducing games from their own countries during breaks. Flexibility, initiative, and adaptability are vital qualities, as involvement in a variety of tasks may be required.

Volunteers need to take initiative, improvise and be flexible and willing to get involved in a variety of different tasks as needed.
You should keep in mind that your role is to assist the local teachers and placement staff. Volunteers will be expected to participate in the daily routine as needed and due to language barriers, volunteers may have a supporting and
observatory role during some activities.

*For transportation to and from the project, and on weekends, volunteers are advised renting a car as a good option. There is also a public bus service on the island but please note, this can be limited.

*Please note there are also cultural sensitivities around visible tattoos, piercings, and religious attire during the placement, please get in touch if any questions.
