Overview

Assist teaching staff at local primary and secondary schools in suburban neighbourhoods, all within a 30-minute commute from your accommodation. Each morning, you will travel to your assigned school using public buses or taxis. Your primary role will be to support local teachers by following their guidance and helping wherever needed.

Incorporate activities such as games, role-play, music, drama, and interactive storytelling. Your creativity will be a valuable asset in broadening students’ educational experiences and enhancing their enthusiasm for learning.

Subjects You Can Teach

Volunteers can assist in a variety of subjects, including:

  • Music: Piano, violin, guitar, flute, and singing
  • English: Beginner to intermediate levels
  • Sports: Karate, football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball
  • Arts: Sculpture, painting, and drawing
  • Mathematics: Algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and arithmetic
  • Dance: Various styles and techniques

Volunteer Tasks

Supporting Local Teachers

  • Assist educators in English and other subject classes.

Commitment and After-School Engagement

  • Dedicate a minimum of five hours per day to teaching and assisting.
  • Participate in after-school activities as needed to further support students.

Lesson Preparation and Classroom Enrichment

  • Prepare structured lessons and materials for daily classes.
  • Bring teaching aids such as books, games, art supplies, and cultural items to enrich the learning environment.

School Holidays
Colombia’s school calendar for 2025 is generally divided into two main semesters:
1. First Semester:
○ Starts on January 27, 2025.
○ Includes a mid-semester Easter break from April 12–20, 2025.
○ Ends on June 20, 2025.
2. Second Semester:
○ Begins on July 14, 2025.
○ Includes a mid-semester break from October 4–13, 2025.
○ Concludes on December 5, 2025.
*Schools also have additional institutional development days for educators, including dates in January, April, July, and October.

Location

Cartagena, a vibrant coastal city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is renowned for its rich history, colourful colonial architecture, and lively cultural scene. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cartagena’s walled city is filled with cobblestone streets, historic forts, and charming plazas that offer a glimpse into its colonial past. The city is also known for its beautiful beaches, such as Playa Blanca and Bocagrande, where visitors can relax and enjoy the tropical climate. Cartagena’s bustling markets, vibrant street art, and delicious local cuisine reflect its diverse cultural heritage.

Food & Accommodation

You will be staying in a peaceful and secure residential area of Los Corales, near Cartagena, Colombia. This location provides easy access to various attractions and sites, as well as your program placement, via public transport or local taxis. Rooms are single gender and shared with 2-4 people, with wester toilets, fans, hot showers and bed linen. Wifi and laundry facilities are not provided but can be found in the nearby town. You will find an ATM and supermarket a 5 min walk from the accommodation. There are plenty of local markets, and national restaurants within the town where you can find lots of fresh Mexican dishes, deserts, and local refreshments.

We ask you be environmentally conscious and to use resources responsibly, particularly water, paper, and electricity. You are also required to clean up after yourself and contribute to keeping the accommodation tidy and well-organised.

The food will be traditional Colombian, with plenty of corn tortillas, beans, rice, chili peppers, potatoes, wheat and other grains, and chicken, all of which are vegetarian-friendly. Keep in mind that some local dishes may be spicy!

All meals will be provided at the mentioned accommodation. Every day of the program, three full meals will be provided, beginning with breakfast at 8 am, lunch at 12 p.m., and dinner at 6 p.m. On weekends, there are two meals available: brunch at 10 a.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Food consists primarily of traditional local dishes prepared and served at the accommodation or in the surrounding area. Meals will be served based on your dietary requirements, but you must notify us in advance.

Please note: The accommodation location is subject to change based on local conditions and unforeseen circumstances; however, the same standard of housing will be maintained.

On the Monday of your first week at this location, you will join our orientation day, to familiarize you with the surroundings as well as local culture. Your program will continue as usual from Tuesday onwards throughout the rest of the week.

Before entering or exiting Colombia, all travellers must complete a free online form (‘Check-Mig’) on the Migracion Colombia website. This form is free and must be completed on the Migracion Colombia website between 72 hours and one hour before your flight’s departure. We recommend that you check the immigration and entry requirements for their nationality ahead of time.Programs begin every Monday, and volunteers are required to arrive the day prior, for orientation before the project. Your accommodation on the Sunday is included in the program fees.

A free airport pickup is included when arriving to Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG). You must arrive between 08:00 to 17:00 on Sunday. There is an extra fee for Saturday night accommodation and transfer. 

If you want to book any extra nights before or after your program, you can do this for an extra fee. 

Alternatively, if arriving early you could wait at the arrival’s terminal for the pickup time, book accommodation at the airport and meet us during the pickup times or make your own way to the project (we will advise on how to do this).

From CTG Airport to your accommodation by taxi it takes 20 minutes.

Things to Do in Cartagena

Explore the Walled City – Wander through Cartagena’s historic Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with colourful colonial buildings, lively plazas, and charming cafes. The well-preserved walls and forts offer a glimpse into the city’s past.

Visit Castillo San Felipe de Barajas – This massive fortress on a hilltop offers stunning views and a chance to learn about Cartagena’s colonial history. Explore its tunnels, battlements, and strategic defences used against pirate attacks.

Relax at Playa Blanca – One of the best beaches near Cartagena, Playa Blanca offers white sand, turquoise waters, and a relaxed island vibe. A short boat or bus ride takes you to this tropical escape.

Take a Boat Trip to the Rosario Islands – This group of islands is perfect for snorkelling, diving, and enjoying crystal-clear waters. Many tours include visits to private beaches and seafood lunches.

Additional Requirements

The following are further necessary in order for the participants, local staff and everyone involved to have a meaningful, enjoyable, and safe community program.

  • Older participants over 65 years are required to have a medical clearance as proof of their physical fitness as they may perform various activities.
  • Participants below 18 years old need a signed parental consent as proof of involvement of their children in the program. If possible, accompaniment by an adult is highly advised.
  • Genuine interests and passion for teaching children/students.
  • Since you are working with students with so much energy and different personalities, a decent level of energy and patience is required.

Additional Equipment

Teaching Materials:

  • You are encouraged to bring games, books, colored pencils, chalk, rulers, and a variety of interactive educational resources.
  • Consider bringing personal pictures from your home country, showcasing your family and friends, to facilitate cultural exchange.
  • Additionally, include small cultural objects that represent your country of origin to enhance the learning experience.

Personal Attire and Accessories:

  • Please pack modest or business casual attire suitable for school and village interactions. Ensure that your clothing covers the knees and shoulders, avoiding revealing, tight-fitting, sheer, or low-cut attire.
  • For outdoor activities, it’s advisable to have insect repellent (Deet) to protect against potential insect bites.
  • Keep a reusable water bottle or hydration pack with you to stay well-hydrated throughout the day.
  • Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s rays during outdoor engagements.
  • Carry your personal medications and a well-equipped first aid kit in case of any unforeseen medical needs.
  • Include wet wipes, a facemask, hand sanitizer, and a notebook with a pen or pencil for your daily essentials.

Bogotá, located in the Andes at 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, has a cooler, spring-like climate with frequent rain showers. Medellín, known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” enjoys mild temperatures between 63–82°F (17–28°C) year-round. The Amazon region is hot and humid, with heavy rainfall supporting its vast rainforests. Colombia has two main weather patterns: dry season (December–March, July–August) and rainy season (April–June, September–November). Travelers should plan accordingly depending on the activities they want to experience.

Colombian culture is a vibrant mix of indigenous traditions, Spanish heritage, and African influences, creating a rich and diverse national identity. Music and dance are at the heart of Colombian life, with cumbia, vallenato, salsa, and reggaeton playing a significant role in social gatherings and festivals. The country is home to some of the world’s most colourful celebrations, such as the Carnaval de Barranquilla, one of Latin America’s largest festivals, and the Feria de Cali, which celebrates salsa music. Art and literature also flourish in Colombia, with Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel Prize-winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, being one of its most famous cultural icons.
