Overview

Make a hands on difference in rural Uganda by helping improve vital community infrastructure. Many schools, clinics, and public buildings lack the funding and manpower for proper maintenance, and that’s where you come in.

This program offers the chance to assist with building and repair projects, such as classroom renovations, water tank construction, and basic site maintenance. Not only will you help create better environments for learning and living, but you’ll also gain practical experience, work closely with locals, and immerse yourself in daily life in Uganda.

Program Highlights:

  • Building & Repairs: Support projects like constructing water tanks, painting walls, fixing furniture, and more.
  • Community Development: Help upgrade schools, health centres, and shared community facilities.
  • Environmental Projects: Plant gardens and flowers to beautify spaces and support sustainability.
  • Cultural Exchange: Work side by side with locals and gain insight into rural Ugandan life.

Your Role:

  • Contribute to construction and maintenance tasks such as digging, mixing, building, and painting.
  • Help prepare work sites by clearing land, digging trenches, or planting greenery.
  • Collaborate with local workers and fellow volunteers to complete projects efficiently and creatively.
  • Offer practical support and ideas to enhance community facilities for long-term use.

Location

Kajjansi is a small but growing town located along the main road between Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, and Entebbe International Airport. It offers a peaceful, semi-rural setting while still being conveniently close to urban amenities. Surrounded by lush greenery and small farms, Kajjansi is known for its tight-knit community, local markets, and artisanal craft centres.

Project Tasks

  • Support the community and promote sustainable development in the village
  • Give you a sense of achievement through light construction and renovation projects
  • Assist the effort with extra hands

Food & Accommodation

You’ll be accommodated in a local homestay, which offers a more comfortable experience with a cozy family atmosphere. Rooms are single gender and will be shared with 4-8 volunteers. There are no fans, AC, or hot showers, and laundry needs to be hand washed, with brushes and buckets provided. Bed linen is included.

There are numerous shops within 10-15 minutes walking distance of our homestay. The homestay can arrange transportation to Kampala. Local transportation from farm accommodation is much less frequent, but arrangements can be made and/or information provided to help you get to Kampala, Uganda’s capital.

We ask that all participants live sustainably and use resources like water, electricity, and paper mindfully. Everyone is responsible for cleaning up after themselves and helping to keep the living spaces clean and organised.

Please note that there is no WiFi available at either location. To stay connected, you’ll need to purchase a local SIM card with mobile data.

Ugandan cuisine will be served, which means plenty of vegetables, potatoes, bananas, bread, and pancakes. Some dishes may contain meat, but if you are vegetarian, please notify your coordinator.

Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa, bordered by Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and South Sudan to the north. With a population of approximately 48 million people, Uganda is one of the most youthful countries in the world, with the majority of its citizens under the age of 30. The capital city, Kampala, is a lively urban hub known for its markets, nightlife, and cultural diversity.

Religion plays an important role in Ugandan life, with Christianity and Islam being the most practiced faiths. Geographically, Uganda is part of the African Great Lakes region and boasts incredible biodiversity, including a portion of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Its varied landscape includes mountains, savannahs, forests, and wetlands, making it an exciting destination for travellers and conservationists alike.

Uganda’s location near the equator gives it a tropical climate that is generally warm and pleasant throughout the year. Average daily temperatures range from 25°C to 29°C (77°F–84°F), making it comfortable for most travellers. The country experiences two main rainy seasons—from March to May and September to November—which can make rural roads difficult to navigate. The dry seasons (December–February and June–August) are the best times for travel and outdoor activities. Elevation also plays a role in climate; higher-altitude regions like Kabale or the Rwenzori Mountains can be quite cool, especially at night.

Uganda has a mix of diverse cultures, ethnicities, and traditions, with over 50 ethnic groups, each with its own language and customs. The Baganda are the largest ethnic group and dominate the central region, but others like the Basoga, Banyankole, Bakiga, and Acholi contribute to the nation’s rich heritage. Traditional music, dance, and storytelling are integral to social life, often performed during community gatherings, weddings, and festivals. Respect for elders, hospitality, and strong community ties are central to Ugandan society. Religion also plays a significant role in daily life, with many people attending church or mosque regularly. Visitors are often struck by the warmth and friendliness of the Ugandan people, making cultural exchange a rewarding part of any trip.
