Welcome to IVI’s Turtle Conservation Program in Bali! We offer an incredible opportunity to contribute to environmental preservation and protect one of the ocean’s most beloved creatures. If you’re considering volunteering, here’s a look at what’s involved.
The Importance of Turtle Conservation in Bali
Bali is home to numerous turtle species, many of which are threatened by pollution, poaching, habitat destruction, and illegal trade. Sea turtles in Indonesian islands face various threats, including habitat destruction due to coastal development, pollution, and climate change. Illegal poaching for meat, eggs, and shells remains a significant concern, and turtles are also vulnerable to accidental capture in fishing gear, impacting their populations.
Conservation programs aim to safeguard these species through community education, hands-on care, and releasing turtles back into their natural habitat.
Key Activities in Turtle Conservation Programs
1. Caring for Rescued Turtles
Volunteers work at rescue centres, assisting with feeding, cleaning tanks, and collecting data on the turtles. Many turtles arrive injured, with conditions like damaged shells or ingestion of plastic. You will help to care for them and their wider environment.
2. Beach Cleaning Initiatives
Plastic waste is one of the greatest threats to marine life. Volunteers regularly participate in beach clean-ups, removing debris and improving nesting conditions for turtles.
3. Egg Protection and Hatchery Management
Turtle eggs are highly vulnerable to predators and human interference. Conservation centres often have hatcheries where eggs are safely incubated. Volunteers may get a chance to monitor these hatcheries, ensuring optimal conditions for successful hatching.
4. Education and Community Outreach
Raising awareness among local communities and tourists is vital. Volunteers may give presentations, conduct workshops, or organize campaigns to teach sustainable practices and discourage harmful behaviours like purchasing turtle products.
5. Releasing Hatchlings
A highlight for many volunteers is releasing baby turtles into the ocean. This act symbolizes the culmination of weeks or months of effort and is crucial for boosting wild populations.
What You’ll Learn
Work alongside a local team and help protect the endangered sea turtles of Indonesia. Through this program, you will contribute to protecting the turtle population in Nusa Penida by working at our turtle conservation centre. Depending on the time of the year (turtles do not nest all year round), you may be identifying turtle species, collecting eggs, monitoring nests, or seeing hatchlings get safely to sea.
Volunteering in turtle conservation offers personal growth and unique insights into marine biology, environmental challenges, and cultural appreciation. You’ll develop skills in animal care, teamwork, and environmental advocacy while forming meaningful connections with other volunteers and locals.
The Volunteer Experience
Accommodation
Our volunteer accommodation is in a volunteer house with shared dorms, or you can book a private room upgrade. Meals are included, featuring local Balinese cuisine. Living arrangements encourage a social experience among participants, enhancing the overall experience.
Daily Routine
A typical day might include early-morning beach patrols, turtle care tasks during the day, and community events in the evening. Days are structured but allow for some free time to explore Bali’s natural and cultural beauty.
Cultural Immersion
Volunteers not only contribute to conservation but also experience Balinese culture firsthand. From participating in local ceremonies to exploring temples and markets, the experience is holistic and enriching.
Anything Specific I Need to Bring?
Personal belongings such as:
- Comfortable shoes and clothes so you can move comfortably and easily.
- Personal toiletries such as basic soap, shampoo, toothpaste and towels.
- Bring a hat, and sunglasses to protect from the heat of the sun, particularly during a long day of strenuous activities under the heat of the sun.
- An environmentally friendly sunscreen or lotion is also advised to protect you from the heat of the sun and please carry with you preventive agents during outdoor activities, such as mosquito repellents for insect bites or other insects that may irritate your skin.
- Medicines with you especially if you have to take specific medicines regularly as well as other medicines for headaches and stomach aches.
- Refillable water bottles and hydration packs to stay hydrated throughout the day, particularly during exploration and outdoor activities.
The sea turtle season coincides with the rainy season. The climate tends to be hot and humid. Therefore, we recommend that you bring fresh clothes, a bathing suit, sunglasses, and a hat. Oh! Don’t forget the sunscreen. During the rainy season, the mosquito population increases, so light pants and long-sleeved shirts/t-shirts can be very helpful. Also, mosquito repellents, mosquito nets, snorkelling equipment and a small backpack can be of great use. Other items such as personal computers, binoculars and books are left to your discretion.
Why Bali?
