IVI Volunteer Insurance Plans

IVI have 2 options for volunteer travel insurance:

Standard Plan

The Standard Plan is perfect for volunteers taking part in everyday projects and low-risk activities. It provides essential protection, including medical coverage for illness or injury, trip interruption or delay, and cover for lost or stolen belongings.

A reliable choice if your program is community-based, classroom-focused, or generally doesn’t involve adventurous activities.

*Price from $30USD per/week

Sports & Adventure Plan

The Adventure Plan is designed for volunteers whose projects or free-time activities involve more physical or outdoor challenges. Along with all the benefits of the Standard Plan, it includes 150+ Sports & Activities, such as diving, water sports, and trekking.

This plan offers extra peace of mind if your volunteering experience takes you off the beaten track.

*Price from $66USD for first week, then $33 each week thereafter

*The IVI standard plan is designed to cover a wide range of normal activities for travelers.  Activities that are excluded include mountain climbing, hang gliding, parachuting, bungee jumping, parasailing, activities that involve racing (if using a vehicle or animal), and team athletics. These exclusions are designed to address “inherently dangerous” activities and not activities associated with normal travel.

Normal activities such as these are covered in the standard plan: hiking where ropes are not needed (though professionally run/commercial rope courses and professionally run/commercial zip lines are covered), injuries that occur in the course of being a passenger on a commercial vehicle (so issues related to being a passenger on a boat, taxi, bus, plane are covered), recreational water activities are covered such as scuba or snorkeling or boating/kayak/canoe or paddleboarding (noting that adding a sail or parachute or an element of speed likely moves these to “thrill/extreme” activities that would not be covered), and that you may participate in fitness activities (jog, run, lift weights) or even participate in sports and games with others for fun – but that this policy is not designed for the concentrated organized practice and games associated with team sports.

*If your trip involves activities that you believe would be excluded by this policy, please review the list of Adventure Plan Activities on the Adventure Package Brochure and consider upgrading your insurance coverage.

Why You Need Volunteer Travel Insurance

Typical travel or health policies often don’t cover the kinds of risks volunteers take on. Whether it’s remote clinics, rugged terrain, wildlife conservation, or adventure excursions, these activities can result in situations that standard policies might exclude.

With volunteer-specific insurance, you get coverage built around:
  • Medical emergencies abroad: hospital stays, treatment, medication.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if something serious happens.
  • Trip delays or interruptions, e.g. natural disasters, political unrest.
  • Loss or damage to baggage, electronics, documents.
  • Adventure-type activities such as trekking, kayaking, diving.

  • IVI offer travel insurance when booking a program with us.
