| The work was demanding but rewarding. I left the accommodation at 7am and returned about 5.30pm; a long day at this time of year when afternoon shade temperatures are 30 degrees. A good degree of fitness (and an umberella) is essential.I helped with a variety of jobs on the construction of 5 houses including painting, sheet metal wall construction, window sill cutting and fitting, door frames, window stops. I was able to apply existing DIY skills . Others might not have been so confident about using power tools like power drivers, circular saws and angle grinders. I enjoyed being part of the building team. One of the highlights was being invited into a completed house, meeting the owners and sharing their food . The local host was extremely supportive. The food was excellent . As I was the only volunteer at this time I had full run of a spacious apartment with lots of homely touches. |
