Location

This journey takes you through the heart of Guangxi province, home to some of China’s most iconic landscapes. From the timeless riverside charm of Xingping to the adventure-filled energy of Yangshuo, the week offers a perfect balance of outdoor discovery and cultural immersion.

Xingping
One of the oldest towns along the Li River, Xingping is famed for its breathtaking scenery—so much so that its dramatic karst peaks feature on the back of the 20 Yuan note. Wandering through Xingping Old Town, you’ll find cobbled streets, traditional wooden homes, and quaint family-run shops that echo centuries of local life. The riverside is perfect for bamboo rafting or peaceful evening strolls, especially at sunset when the limestone cliffs glow in the fading light.

Yangshuo
Yangshuo is the adventure capital of southern China, surrounded by towering limestone peaks, emerald rice paddies, and meandering rivers. It’s a paradise for climbers, cyclists, and outdoor lovers. After a day of adventure, head to West Street, where local eateries, craft shops, and international cafés create a lively and welcoming vibe. Just beyond town, you’ll find quiet country paths, caves, and scenic waterways that capture the peaceful spirit of rural Guangxi.

Fuli Cultural Street
Known as the “hometown of Chinese fans,” Fuli is a small yet culturally rich village where artisans have been handcrafting and painting fans for generations. As you walk its narrow lanes, you’ll see artists painting elegant designs of landscapes, flowers, and dragons onto large paper fans.

Xianggongshan
Xianggongshan is one of China’s most photographed viewpoints, offering sweeping panoramas over the winding Li River and its dramatic karst mountains. A sunrise hike to the summit is truly unforgettable as the morning mist lifts and golden light reveals the peaks below. This spot has inspired countless photographers and is considered a highlight of any Guangxi itinerary.

Moon Hill & 10-li Gallery Road
The 10-li Gallery Road (meaning “10-mile Gallery”) is one of the most scenic cycling routes in Yangshuo, weaving past rice fields, bamboo forests, and karst peaks. Along the route stands Moon Hill, a striking natural arch that resembles a giant moon in the sky. Adventurous visitors can climb to the arch for stunning countryside views.

Project Aims

  • Provide participants with an immersive adventure program in southern China
  • Introduce traditional Chinese practices like Taichi and fan painting
  • Foster appreciation for China’s cultural and natural heritage
  • Build resilience and teamwork through outdoor activities

China is officially known as the People’s Republic of China and is governed by a centralized one-party system. Its capital is Beijing, while other major cities include Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. The economy is the second-largest in the world and incredibly diverse, ranging from high-tech industries and manufacturing to agriculture and traditional crafts. Despite rapid urban development, large parts of the country remain rural and offer insight into traditional Chinese lifestyles.

Mandarin Chinese is the official language, though dozens of other dialects and minority languages are spoken across the country. Religion in China is varied, including Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity, and traditional folk beliefs, although religious practice is often closely monitored. Public transport is generally efficient, especially in major cities, and high-speed trains connect many regions. While China has embraced modern technology, customs such as Confucian respect for elders and community still play an important role in daily life.

China’s climate is incredibly varied due to its size. The north experiences cold, dry winters and hot summers, while the south is typically more humid and subtropical. The central regions see four distinct seasons. Hainan, located in the far south, has a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round, making it a popular destination for beachgoers and sun seekers. Typhoon season usually runs from June to September.

Chinese culture is steeped in tradition, with deep respect for family, education, and social harmony. Festivals such as Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival are widely celebrated and often centre around family gatherings, food, and honouring ancestors. Calligraphy, martial arts, opera, and traditional Chinese medicine are just a few cultural elements still practiced today. While modernization has introduced Western influences, many traditions are still passed down through generations.
