Overview

We have paired up with a fantastic local NGO on the ground in Turkey, who have been helping displaced people and refugees since 1014. They implement education and empowerment programs to create sustainable and just change. The initiative aims to bring lasting and long-term solutions to the challenges in the lives of displaced people through its innovative programs.

Currently there are an estimated 4 million refugees residing in Turkey however only around 5% are living in official camps that are supported by multinational humanitarian aid organisations. The remaining 3.8 million live in thousands of unofficial settlements dotted across the country with no official support and no way to gain legal employment. It is these unofficial settlements, where the living conditions are the most severe, that we focus our efforts.

There are a few programs you can get involved in…

Solar Age Program:

The Solar Age Program aims to two tackle two of the world’s greatest problems; the global environmental crisis and the empowerment and the financial independence of vulnerable women. In the 2018 Solar Age Program, the women, or “Solar Ladies” learnt the basics of solar engineering and those who want to continue can work on the production of solar panels for EFE Solar Powerbanks, one of the outputs of the Solar Age program.

These practical skills aim to facilitate access to economic independence. EFE Solar Powerbanks deliver to people without access to electricity on migration routes, in disaster and war zones. So far, EFE Powerbanks have been delivered to displaced people in Tuzla, Bosnia; people affected by the war in Ukraine and people affected by the Syrian-Turkey earthquake, along with people on the migration routes.

Back To School Programs

Refugee children are legally entitled to enter state education, but many factors act as barriers to this becoming a reality. The first being the need for a basic level of Turkish comprehension. In order to enter formal schooling and also participate in everyday life, being able to communicate is paramount.

The Back to School Programme provides lessons in reading, writing and basic maths and science. Since the program focuses on the children of refugee families who are generally engaged in agricultural work in Turkey, it is carried out in the rural areas of Izmir, where there is a high concentration of workers. Thanks to supporters, a bus was purchased in 2021 and its interior was designed as an education classroom. Thus, educational activities are not interrupted due to seasonal conditions.

The local team run education activities for the children. Those activities aim to fill up the educational gaps so children can better integrate the schooling system. That means literacy and basic mathematics and Turkish, but also socialisation and concentration activities. You can participate in the activities by supporting the teachers, especially with smaller children (age 2-6). Speaking Arabic would obviously help you communicate, but you can easily manage with sign language!

In addition to these activities, a Multicultural Library has been established, and activities such as the distribution of necessities such as food and hygiene packages, and the distribution of educational materials in the earthquake zone were carried out.

Location

Izmir is a coastal city in western Turkey, known for its rich history, beautiful coastline, and vibrant culture. It’s the third-largest city in Turkey and offers a mix of ancient sites, stunning beaches, and modern amenities, making it a popular destination for travelers.

Volunteer Tasks
We plan the tasks once a week. Please be ready to be very flexible, as planned activities can often change at short notice depending on what comes up.

You will join our Back to School Program 4 days a week at Torbali camps with our two educators, field manager, cultural mediator and project manager. Please do not be late because that will impact the whole activity and always listen and follow the instructions of the volunteer coordinator.

The tasks are:
▪ Helping to prepare the car with study materials. Helping unload the car on camps and load the car again before turning back.
▪ At camps helping the team with activities and solving problems of children to get a more comfortable study place.
▪ Depending on the turning back time to the city centre and weekly plan, you may join the children’s activities in Basmane with the team.

The volunteers’ tasks are as follows:
▪ Completing daily tasks,
▪ Clean-up of all work spaces,
▪ Participating in camp distribution, Back to School and Solar Age activities,
▪ Supporting the coordination team,
▪ Preparing the vehicle and warehouse before and after distribution and Back to School activities,
▪ Maintaining current inventory and cleanliness of the warehouse,
▪ Conducting activities specific to your skills as approved by field coordinator.

Working Hours
Flexibility is important but we work roughly 8 hours per day, five days per week – weekends usually being our free days, but not always. Some days are more intensive and include travel out to camps while others are more relaxed but there is always plenty of time for tea.

Back to school
Activities take place 4 days a week. Monday-Thursday. Friday is office day.

On field days our team meets at the Ucyol metro station at 8:30am and our drivers pick you up. After a 45-60 min drive you’ll arrive at the program. You can buy something for breakfast on the road.

For lunch, there is no chance to buy something due to the remote location so, you can bring food to eat on the bus. We have a kitchen on the bus for heating or anything else. Work ends at 4pm and the van will take you back to the metro station. Times and meeting points can change depending on conditions.

Solar age program
This program runs 5 days Monday to Friday in the workshop. On Friday the children activities start at 1pm. Our colleagues come to the office for the weekly general meeting on Friday morning and they turn back to Basmane in the afternoon. From Monday – Thursday, the children activities start at 9 am and finish at 5pm.

In the afternoon there is a 1-hour lunch for the children and our team. We bring food for the children and our volunteers can eat with them if they prefer.

Setting tasks for volunteers depends on their abilities. In all programs we need different types of people and help so we make plans in our weekly meeting with our volunteers and all teams.

Turkey, a transcontinental country straddling Europe and Asia, offers a captivating tapestry of history, culture, and diverse landscapes. With its bustling metropolises like Istanbul, where East meets West, and ancient marvels like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Turkey is a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Its culinary scene, featuring delights such as kebabs and baklava, reflects a rich gastronomic heritage influenced by various civilizations.

The country’s warm hospitality and breathtaking natural beauty, from the Mediterranean coastline to the rugged landscapes of Cappadocia, make it a compelling destination for travellers. While Turkey thrives with economic dynamism and historical richness, it also faces challenges such as educational disparities and economic stability. However, the nation’s resilient spirit and ongoing efforts for progress underscore a story of contrasts and continuous growth, making Turkey a captivating and evolving part of the global tapestry.

Turkey experiences a diverse range of climates due to its varied topography and geographical features. In general, the country can be categorised into three main climate zones: a Mediterranean climate along the southern coast, a continental climate in the interior, and a Black Sea climate along the northern coast.

Mediterranean Climate:

    • The southern coastal regions, including popular tourist destinations like Antalya, experience a Mediterranean climate.
    • Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wet.
    • This region is characterized by long, sunny days and relatively mild temperatures in winter.

Continental Climate:

    • The interior parts of Turkey, including cities like Ankara, have a continental climate.
    • Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F), while winters can be cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing.
    • Temperature variations between seasons are more pronounced in the continental climate zone.

Black Sea Climate:

    • The northern coastal areas along the Black Sea, such as Trabzon, experience a temperate climate.
    • Summers are warm and humid, while winters are cool and damp.
    • This region receives a significant amount of rainfall throughout the year.

Eastern Anatolian Climate:

    • Eastern Anatolia, characterized by high plateaus and mountains, has a harsher climate.
    • Winters can be extremely cold, with heavy snowfall, while summers are short and warm.

Aegean Climate:

    • The western coastal regions, including Izmir and Bodrum, have a climate similar to the Mediterranean but with some variations.
    • Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wet.

The diversity of Turkey’s climate makes it a year-round destination, catering to various preferences from beachgoers to winter sports enthusiasts. However, travellers should be mindful of regional variations and plan accordingly based on the specific climate of the areas they intend to visit.

Turkey’s culture is a fascinating mix of old and new, shaped by its diverse history and welcoming people. The warmth of the Turkish people stands out, making hospitality a big part of their culture. They love sharing meals, especially their delicious cuisine that blends different flavours.

The Turkish language is like a common thread that connects the past and present, and their stories are told through both old and new writings.

In big cities like Istanbul, you’ll find a lively scene of art, movies, and music that adds a modern touch to the traditional culture. Families and communities are really important in Turkey, and they celebrate special occasions with lively festivals that show off their unique traditions.

In a nutshell, Turkey’s culture is a mix of the old and the new, offering a warm and rich experience for both locals and those excited to explore Turkish traditions.
