Colombia is a diverse and vibrant country located in the northwest of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Panama. It is the only South American country with coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, making it a prime destination for beach lovers. Colombia is known for its breathtaking landscapes, from the towering Andes Mountains to the Amazon Rainforest and the rolling hills of the Coffee Region.

The country has a rich cultural and historical heritage, shaped by indigenous civilizations, Spanish colonization, and African influences. Despite its turbulent past, Colombia has transformed into a dynamic and welcoming destination, with cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, and Cali offering a mix of history, modernity, and local charm. With its growing economy, tourism boom, and friendly locals, Colombia is increasingly recognized as one of the top places to visit in Latin America.

Colombia’s climate is as diverse as its geography, with no traditional seasons like in temperate countries. Instead, the country experiences different climates based on altitude and region. The Caribbean and Pacific coastal areas are warm and humid year-round, perfect for enjoying the beaches.

Bogotá, located in the Andes at 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, has a cooler, spring-like climate with frequent rain showers. Medellín, known as the “City of Eternal Spring,” enjoys mild temperatures between 63–82°F (17–28°C) year-round. The Amazon region is hot and humid, with heavy rainfall supporting its vast rainforests. Colombia has two main weather patterns: dry season (December–March, July–August) and rainy season (April–June, September–November). Travelers should plan accordingly depending on the activities they want to experience.

Colombian culture is a vibrant mix of indigenous traditions, Spanish heritage, and African influences, creating a rich and diverse national identity. Music and dance are at the heart of Colombian life, with cumbia, vallenato, salsa, and reggaeton playing a significant role in social gatherings and festivals. The country is home to some of the world’s most colourful celebrations, such as the Carnaval de Barranquilla, one of Latin America’s largest festivals, and the Feria de Cali, which celebrates salsa music. Art and literature also flourish in Colombia, with Gabriel García Márquez, the Nobel Prize-winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude, being one of its most famous cultural icons. Colombians are known for their warmth, hospitality, and passion, and their love for football (soccer) brings people together, especially during international tournaments.

Cartagena, a vibrant coastal city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is renowned for its rich history, colourful colonial architecture, and lively cultural scene. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cartagena’s walled city is filled with cobblestone streets, historic forts, and charming plazas that offer a glimpse into its colonial past. The city is also known for its beautiful beaches, such as Playa Blanca and Bocagrande, where visitors can relax and enjoy the tropical climate. Cartagena’s bustling markets, vibrant street art, and delicious local cuisine reflect its diverse cultural heritage.

You will stay in a volunteer house with other volunteers from around the world. Rooms are shared with the option to upgrade to a private room, where available.

Please see individual program pages for more information.

Colombian cuisine is as diverse as its regions, offering a mix of flavours influenced by indigenous, Spanish, and African culinary traditions. A staple dish across the country is the arepa, a thick corn cake that can be eaten plain or stuffed with cheese, meat, or eggs. Bandeja paisa, a hearty meal originating from the Antioquia region, consists of beans, rice, ground beef, chorizo, fried egg, plantains, avocado, and arepa, making it one of the country’s most iconic dishes. Ajiaco, a comforting chicken and potato soup, is particularly popular in Bogotá, while coastal regions specialize in fresh seafood, coconut rice, and fried plantains. Lechona, a whole roasted pig stuffed with rice and peas, is a festive dish commonly enjoyed in the Tolima region.

Colombia is also world-famous for its coffee, grown in the lush Coffee Triangle (Eje Cafetero), where visitors can tour plantations and taste some of the finest brews in the world. From savoury street food to elaborate traditional meals, Colombia offers a flavourful culinary experience for every traveller.

Each project will include a 1-day orientation to familiarise yourself with the local area, rules, safety advice and general information. Orientation will usually include health and safety advice, do’s and don’ts, cultural norms, activities and tours you can do on weekends, and a short walking tour, showing you the local area.

Cartagena offers a variety of transportation options for getting around the city. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber are common, but it’s best to agree on a price beforehand, as taxis often don’t use meters. Public buses are affordable but can be crowded and less reliable. The Transcaribe bus system, with dedicated lanes, is a faster option for certain routes. Motorcycle taxis (mototaxis) operate in some areas but are not the safest choice.

Many visitors prefer to explore the historic center on foot or rent bicycles. Boats and ferries are available for trips to nearby islands like Isla Barú and the Rosario Islands.
